Psychological facts about youngsters 👀

Adolescence is a phase repleted with brain transformations influencing them physically, emotionally, socially and hormonally. The kind of transitions that needs to be known are-

1. Young people who do not have positive peer relations with family or friends are at a higher risk of developing substance abuse and depression.

2. The top wish among all young girls & boys is for their parents to communicate better with them. This includes frequent and more open conversations.

3.During adolescence, a neurotransmitter (glutamate) responsible for excitatory effect predominates, this makes them all the more prone to thrill seeking and immature behaviors.

4.The same hormone is the reason for their cognitive development responsible for hypothetico-deductive reasoning abilities, and abstract thinking.

5.Inhibitory neurotransmission is still under construction that emboldens them for impulsive behaviours. They don’t usually think of consequences.

6.Increased levels of sleep hormone(melatonin- which helps falling asleep) in teenage years makes them long sleepers and ask for extra bed time after sunrise.

7.Due to hormonal upheaval, they stay up late and resort to bright lights such as mobile phones, comp.screens which hampers the release of melatonin too.

8.Brain maturation is again influenced by environmental factors increasing their proneness to drug abuse, unprotected sex and violence.

9.Socially, they have an imaginary audience leading to the idea that every person in the room is watching them carefully. This leads to self consciousness especially of physical characteristics.

10.For the same reason, they over analyse themselves and idealise unrealistic goals in terms of looks exculsively. This is why they grow prone to eating disorders.

11.They think more about themselves and consider themselves as unique. Hence, often ends up thinking nobody could understand them or think like they do.

12.Their self esteem is highly associated with social desirability particularly among opposite gender. Such factors determines the way they look at themselves and assumes the way world looks at them.
